Helicon Health, an exciting growth business with a unique package of stroke prevention services, was one of only three companies invited to present to David Willetts, Minister of State for Universities and Science, at the opening of IDEALondon today.

IDEALondon, sited in London’s Tech City, is an innovation ‘hot-house’ established by UCL and partners Cisco and DC Thomson as the Innovation and Digital Enterprise Alliance (IDEA).

Helicon Health, a spin out from UCL Business, has developed unique systems and tools that enable better quality shared care closer to home for patients with long-term cardiovascular conditions.  The company’s proven integrated approach, focused initially on stroke prevention, combines patient management tools and advisory systems with accredited learning and clinical governance.  It is being welcomed by a growing number of Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs).

Helicon Health’s presentation to David Willetts MP was part of a wider celebration of Tech City’s third anniversary.  The Prime Minister, David Cameron, visited Tech City today and welcomed independent findings from the Tech City UK report, which highlights how London tech companies are contributing to economic growth, inward investment and high value jobs across the country.

David Patterson, Chief Executive, Helicon Health said, “Stroke is a growing problem in the UK but it is widely acknowledged that, with the right interventions, the number of strokes can be significantly reduced so we were delighted to have the chance to share our progress with David Willetts.

Commenting on the visit, Cengiz Tarhan, Managing Director of UCL Business said, “Helicon Health’s approach to care in the community shows the way forward for management of long term conditions. Having the company present its progress within healthcare services to David Willetts at IDEALondon also showcases the high calibre of spinout companies emerging from UCL and making a positive impact on society.

About Helicon Health
Helicon Health is committed to facilitating shared care for the management of long-term conditions. The company’s aim is to ensure that, as there is an increase in the number of patients managed outside the hospital environment, they also enhance the quality of care.

The Helicon Health goal is to help commissioners move towards a distributed service where the complex patients (10 – 15%) are managed in the hospital setting whilst the rest are either self-testing and self-managing, or being managed by the GP, an outreach service or their community pharmacy.
