A Surgical Kit for Hemiarthroplasty Hip/Shoulder Replacement or Refurbishment

The technology developed at UCL consists of a surgical kit that is suited for performing a hip hemiarthroplasty, in which a femoral head is fitted directly into a socket reamed into the acetabular without any permanent liner or prosthetic acetabular being implanted. This methodology will therefore alleviate the requirement for prosthetic acetebular replacement, and the associated problems of repeat surgery to implant a new prosthetic acetebular.

A Revolutionary New Type of 2-Photon Microscope, that Focuses and Scans the Laser Beam in 3D Space

We have designed and built a prototype of a revolutionary new type of 2-photon microscope. Many important, yet poorly understood processes in biology, such as electrical signalling in neural circuits, are rapid and are distributed in 3D space. Such processes are impossible to monitor with conventional optical methods which are 100-fold too slow. Our new prototype laser scanner, can not only focus and scan the laser beam in 3D space, but offers a 300 fold increase to focusing time.

Phenothiazine Derivatives: Treatment for Neurodegeneration

Lipid peroxidation resulting from oxidative stress is a crucial factor in the pathogenesis of many diseases, including neurodegenerative disorders, cardiovascular disease, asthma and diabetes. Phenothiazine derivatives are capable of reducing or preventing lipid peroxidation and therefore have potential therapeutic value for numerous disease states.

Osteoporosis Diagnostic

This invention identifies variations at a gene which can predict whether or not a patient will respond to Bisphosphates. Approximately 40% of recipients do not respond to Bisphosphonate treatment. The identification of non-responding individuals holds the potential to facilitate patients receiving a more appropriate course of treatment. The total world market for osteoporosis drugs surpassed an estimated £6.35 billion in 2006, and we believe that the market for a predictive assay of this type is extremely large. It is our proposal that all patients about to start any oral Bisphosphates treatment for osteoporosis should be tested to demonstrate their ability to respond to the treatment regime.

Thymosin β4 and Cardiac Progenitors: New Treatments for Heart Disease

Cardiac progenitor cells capable of differentiating into several cell types, including smooth muscle and endothelial cells, have been induced from adult heart tissue by treatment with thymosin β4. These cells will be a valuable tool in the search for drugs that promote myocardial regeneration after a heart attack, or in the treatment of heart disease.

Thymosin β4 Transgenic Model: A Tool for Cardiac Research

Thymosin β4 (Tβ4) plays a key role in the development of the heart. It is the only factor shown to be involved in the development of all types of cells required for myocardial development and regeneration. Transgenic animals with altered Tβ4 expression in the heart thus represent a useful tool for cardiac research.

KCNV2: Novel Mutation Linked to Inhibition Response Failure

A failure to inhibit responses is a major neurobehavioural deficit seen in neurological disorders such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, ADHD. Although a genetic etiology for this deficit has been proposed, no molecular mechanism has yet been elucidated. UCL researchers have identified the first genetic mutation linked with failure of normal response inhibition, providing an attractive target for future research and therapy for disorders such as ADHD.

RIMS1: Novel Target for Enhancement of Cognitive Function

Although several genes have been implicated in reduced cognitive ability, much less is known about the genetic basis of enhanced cognition. UCL researchers have identified the first genetic mutation linked with supra-normal cognition, providing an attractive target for therapeutic intervention in cases of cognitive impairment or decline.

Indicators of Therapeutic Efficacy of Remicade® (Infliximab)

UCL scientists have developed an invention to predict the therapeutic efficacy of Infliximab in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). This assay could possibly extend to predict efficacy of other antibody therapies such as Humira®. Additionally, the invention can be used to determine which patients should be treated with a given antibody therapy.

A New Model of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Screen for New Drug Treatments and Genetic Markers for ADHD

We have discovered mutant mice that offer the best known model of ADHD. We have identified a novel target that can be used to screen for new drug treatments for ADHD. We believe that we have identified for the first time the correct target for this condition. Moreover our findings suggest that agonists of the target can be developed as a novel class of drug treatments. Finding a new drug treatment for ADHD is the logical next step of our work. In parallel we have identified a genetic test that can be used to identify genetic subtypes of ADHD. Our findings identify a new target for development of novel treatments for ADHD, which would avoid concerns about the use of Ritalin to treat ADHD. More recent findings show that the target is also important for alcoholism and for bipolar disorder.

A Novel Luminescent Label for both Fluorescence and Chemiluminescence-Based Bioassays and Cellular Probes

We present a novel fluorescent and chemiluminescent labelling system for fluorescence and direct chemiluminescent bioassays, based on the pro-chemiluminescent properties of the API fluorescent molecule. API-labelled biomolecules are detected with the use of a developing agent, whereupon the API label is converted to a non-covalently bound and sensitive chemiluminescent substrate.

A Bio-Artificial Liver Machine (BAL)

We have invented a new treatment for patients with acute liver failure. Currently the only cure for liver failure is transplantation; however this treatment is restricted by the large shortage of donor organs. Many patients die whilst waiting for a transplant. There is an urgent need for a fully functioning support device, to help the patient’s own liver to recover or to act as a bridge until a transplant is available.
