First heart patients diagnosed using technology developed by Echopoint

6 February 2023

The iKOr device, a new fibre optic technology developed at Barts Health and UCL, has begun clinical testing on patients to find out the causes of heart disease.

The device has a temperature and pressure sensor that is 0.2mm wide, which is threaded through the patient’s blood vessels. It measures the flow rate around the heart and detects any obstructions in the vessels.

Medical physicists and engineers at UCL invented this fibre optic sensing technology. In 2019, they set up Echopoint Medical which was commercialised with support from UCLB.
