Impact at the heart of everything we do

What drives us is the passionate belief in people benefiting from UCL’s world-changing technologies. This lies at the very heart of everything we do. From more effective cancer treatments and rare diseases to AI solutions for lowering carbon emissions - we endeavour to make sure the work we carry out has a positive impact on the world around us.

In commercialising selected technologies and research from UCL’s academics and researchers, we help take innovations from the lab to the market, nurturing businesses and protecting and licensing ideas that are leading the way in healthcare, society, and infrastructure. We take pride in working with UCL’s academic innovators, connecting their groundbreaking research to real-world solutions.

Our end-to-end commercialisation ecosystem supports UCL academics to bring their ideas to market for real-world impact, changing lives for the better while encouraging a virtuous circle in which revenue can flow back to the university to support further research.

Our commitment to societal impact

We aim to make a positive social impact for people and their communities.

We do this by commercialising promising ideas that can transform outcomes for people – whether that’s high tech medical research to benefit  those living with chronic and rare health conditions or novel ideas for helping communities tackle social challenges.

We also create ‘social ventures’ – businesses which are established by UCL’s growing number of social entrepreneurs with the express aim of making  noticeable impact on the communities around them. We recognise that impact is determined by more than just profit. That’s why we’re actively working with projects that take steps towards addressing society’s issues.

Accelerating the transition to net Zero

We help commercialise and grow technologies and – businesses that are helping solve some of the world’s most challenging and complex environmental challenges.

We’re proud to work with pioneers in UCL who are applying cutting edge technologies and research to accelerate the transition to net zero. By helping support those businesses to grow, refine and apply their technologies at scale, we are helping achieve much-needed impact here and now – as well as those technologies that will be essential for a fossil fuel-free energy future.

MATcelerate Zero

We’re proud to be part of the MATcelerate Zero initiative, which brings together leading materials research from UK universities, together with industry. The initiative, backed by the Henry Royce Institute, was set up with a view to accelerating the growth and development of sustainably focused technologies and research.

We also strive to be the very best in our sector – and our policies and procedures are informed by independent best practice guidelines, such as the UK government’s Independent Review of University Spin-out Companies.

Our commitment to championing Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and staff wellbeing.

We are a people business and we are absolutely committed to ensuring UCLB is culturally and practically a diverse, welcoming, and wellbeing-driven organisation

We believe that our diversity is our strength, and we support Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in all its forms, with a continuous-improvement ethos driven by our staff EDI group.
