Join us as we chat with Dean Barratt, Professor of Medical Image Computing, Dept of Med Phys & Biomedical Eng and founder of SmartTarget, a spinout from UCL.

SmartTarget is a software-based medical image fusion system for guiding minimally-invasive surgical procedures for the detection and treatment of prostate cancer. Its unique technology is based on research by scientists and engineers within UCL’s Centre for Medical Image Computing (CMIC), one of the world’s leading academic groups in the field of medical image processing and analysis.

Dean will discuss his commercialisation journey, translating SmartTarget into a clinical practice. This journey enabled him to build significant knowledge and experience in quality management and regulatory compliance of medical devices.

The sessions are open to academics and research staff/fellows only, and not intended for PhD students.

The I/O Lab Coffee Clubs are monthly one-hour sessions for academics to gather informally to discuss topics relevant to research commercialisation and to network with the supporting community both within and outside UCL. The rationale for launching the sessions is to encourage academics new to the idea of research commercialisation to come and ask us (UCL Business and UCL Technology Fund) questions and hopefully be inspired to look for opportunities for market impact from their own research portfolios.
