Our spinouts

Turning exciting technologies into exciting enterprises

Over the years we’ve helped many innovators at UCL and our partner NHS Trusts to successfully create and spinout companies. UCLB spinouts have come from across the spectrum, from biomedical and biotechnology, to engineering, mathematics, physical sciences and the built environment.

We support you every step of the way: sourcing funding and investment; building teams; managing your project; finding workspace; and providing links to experts, mentors and other entrepreneurs.

UCLB will have an equity stake in all the companies we help create, and we continue to support and nurture our spinouts over the long term.

Can I commercialise my idea if the intellectual property (IP) isn’t patentable?

Usually, if your IP isn’t patentable (e.g. software, know-how or algorithmic methods), a spinout will offer the best route to market.

UCLB’s Portico Ventures model is designed to help UCL researchers develop spinout companies based on IP developed at UCL.

What if I have an idea for a non-profit business?

If your research has the potential to make a difference to people’s lives, tackle environmental issues or meet community needs, UCLB can help you to set up a social venture.

“I’m incredibly proud of our UCLB spinouts. From developing new cancer therapies, to e-commerce platforms and behavioural science, UCL spinouts are solving real-world problems and improving people’s’ lives every day.”
